Tree care

Avocado Fertilizer Calculator

Feeding an avocado tree is mostly about timing and restraint. This tool gives stage-appropriate guidance for your tree, explains the deficiency signs to look for, and is explicit about when a soil test should come before any fertiliser.

Background

About the avocado fertilizer guide & calculator

Avocado trees are sensitive to salt build-up and to heavy nitrogen at the wrong moment. Young trees need small, frequent, gentle feeding while they build roots. Established trees are fed around their growth flushes. Trees under stress from water or root problems should not be fed at all until the underlying issue is corrected.

This tool deliberately does not calculate a precise gram figure for your soil. Correct rates depend on a soil test, on the analysis printed on your specific product, and on local recommendations. What it gives you is the stage, the emphasis, the cautions and the questions to take to a soil laboratory or your local horticulture office.

How this tool works

  1. 1Enter tree age, container or ground, current growth stage, soil condition and the analysis on your fertiliser bag if you have it.
  2. 2The tool returns the feeding emphasis for that stage, timing guidance and explicit cautions.
  3. 3Where a precise rate would be unsafe to guess, it says so and points you to soil testing.

How to read your result

Stage first, product second

What the tree needs at flowering differs from what it needs while pushing leaf growth. Match the stage before you compare products.

Less, more often, for pots

Container mixes hold few nutrients and flush them out quickly, so small regular feeding is safer than a large dose.

Never feed a sick tree

If leaves are yellowing from wet roots, fertiliser adds stress. Fix drainage, wait for healthy new growth, then feed.

Worked example

A one-year-old potted tree in active growth gets: a balanced, dilute feed at reduced strength during the warm growing months, nothing in the cool season, and a flush of plain water through the pot every few weeks to move accumulated salts out.
