Avocado Watering Calculator
Avocado roots are shallow and sensitive to standing water. This calculator estimates a starting watering volume and frequency for your tree, then adjusts it for season, soil, mulch and rainfall.
About the avocado watering calculator
More avocado trees are lost to too much water than too little. The roots sit near the surface and need air as much as moisture, which is why the standard advice is to water thoroughly and then let the top few centimetres dry before watering again.
Because of that, the figure this tool gives you is a starting point to be corrected by the soil itself. Push a finger into the root zone before every watering. If it is damp, wait. That single habit outperforms any schedule, including this one.
How this tool works
- 1Enter tree age and size, pot or ground, soil type, temperature, rainfall, season, drainage and mulch.
- 2A baseline volume is estimated from canopy size and container volume, then adjusted for evaporation, soil water-holding and recent rain.
- 3You get a volume per watering, a frequency, and season-specific guidance.
How to read your result
Volume matters more than frequency
A deep soak that wets the whole root zone, less often, generally beats a daily splash that only wets the surface.
Rain replaces watering
During monsoon, most established trees need no supplementary water at all. The job shifts to making sure water can drain away.
Correct with the finger test
If the soil is still damp at the recommended interval, extend it. The tool cannot feel your soil.
Worked example
A three-year-old tree in a 60 cm pot, potting mix, 36°C, no rain, summer, mulched: roughly a deep soak every two to three days, with a note to check that water runs freely from the drainage holes and the saucer is emptied.
