Avocado Growing Calculator

Answer a few questions about where and how you are growing, and this tool scores the conditions that matter most to an avocado tree — light, drainage, water, soil and temperature — then tells you what to fix first.

About the avocado growing calculator

Most avocado trees that fail do not fail for exotic reasons. They fail because the roots sit in water, because the tree gets three hours of light instead of six, or because a young plant meets a cold night with no protection. This calculator looks at those basics in the order they usually matter.

The score is a planning aid, not a verdict. A low score does not mean you cannot grow avocado — it means you can see, in one place, which condition is holding the tree back and whether it is something you can change (a pot, a position, a watering habit) or something you have to design around (your climate).

How this tool works

  1. 1You describe your climate, position, container or ground planting, soil and watering routine.
  2. 2Each factor is scored against the conditions avocado trees are generally reported to prefer: free-draining soil, plenty of light, warm days, and soil that dries slightly between waterings.
  3. 3The weakest factors are surfaced first, with a specific change for each one.

How to read your result

70 and above — workable

Your conditions broadly match what avocado trees like. Keep an eye on the individual bars that are lower than the rest.

45 to 69 — needs adjustment

Something specific is limiting the tree. The recommendations list the change most likely to help.

Below 45 — challenging

One or more conditions are working against the tree. Container growing, a different position, or a shift in watering usually helps more than fertiliser.

Worked example

A two-year-old grafted tree on a Mumbai balcony in a 45 cm pot, five hours of direct light, potting mix with perlite, watered twice a week in summer, scores well on drainage and warmth, and flags light as the factor to improve — moving the pot two metres is the whole fix.
