The common mistake is jumping straight to an enormous pot. A large volume of mix around a small root system stays wet for too long, and wet mix is exactly what avocado roots dislike. Stepping up gradually keeps the root zone breathing.

The other half of the answer is drainage. A generous pot with poor drainage is worse than a modest pot that drains freely, whatever the size chart says.
