Before you rely on these figures
- Multiply the annual cost by the number of years before meaningful harvest — that pre-bearing period is the real capital requirement, and it is what new orchards most often underestimate.
- Irrigation is the line most often cut and most often regretted. Avocado needs reliable water.
- Get written quotations for planting material from a nursery that can show you the rootstock and variety records.
- Take the completed figures to your district horticulture office and to growers nearby before committing capital.
Every result here is an estimate built from your own inputs and widely published growing guidance. Real outcomes vary with rootstock, soil, weather, water quality and management.
About the avocado farming cost calculator
Cost planning fails when categories are missing, not when the numbers are slightly off. This calculator lays out the standard heads — land preparation, planting material, irrigation, labour, fertiliser, mulching, plant protection, equipment, maintenance and a line for anything else — so nothing is quietly left out.
Everything is editable. Treat the defaults as prompts. Real quotations from local suppliers, and your own labour rates, will change these figures substantially.
How this tool works
- 1Set your area and tree count, then edit each cost head.
- 2One-time setup costs and recurring annual costs are kept separate.
- 3Totals are shown overall and normalised per acre, per hectare and per tree.
How to read your result
Cost per tree is the comparison figure
It lets you compare plans at different densities and areas on the same basis.
Annual cost continues before income
Multiply annual cost by the number of years before meaningful harvest to see the real capital requirement.
Irrigation is the line most often underestimated
Avocado needs reliable water. Cheap irrigation that fails in a dry spell is the most expensive saving available.
Worked example
One hectare at 5×5 m spacing gives roughly 400 trees. Entering your own quotes gives a defensible setup figure and an annual running cost you can take to a bank or a partner.
